- X-ray plate shows the object stuck inside the boy’s body.
It was actually a needle-shaped metallic part of something that was accidentally swallowed by the seven-year-old boy. The needle-like object was extracted through a non-invasive endoscopic procedure, said a hospital official yesterday.
The child, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to the hospital's emergency department after the incident. The object was stuck inside his small intestine and he was suffering from severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
He was referred to the radiology department where an X-ray and CT scan of the boy's chest and abdomen confirmed the presence of the foreign body, said the official.
The boy was then referred to the paediatric department for surgery.
"The paediatric surgeon who attended the case foresaw the opportunity to save the child from undergoing painful surgery," he said.
Doctors at the hospital's gastroenterology department examined the boy and the possibility of using endoscopic intervention.
Dr Ashraf Ameen, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Al Ain Hospital, decided that an endoscopic procedure could be carried out to remove the needle-like object. The two-hour procedure was performed by a team of doctors, led by Dr Ameen, and the metal piece was successfully extracted from the boy's intestine. The child was then given some medication and sent home.
George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital, said: "We were happy to save the child from painful surgery. This was an example of the interdisciplinary teamwork at the hospital. I congratulate the doctors and the team."
He added the hospital had recently refurbished its endoscopy unit introducing many specialties.
"We have ambitious plans for the endoscopy clinic, in line with our aim of becoming a world-class centre of excellence," said Jepson.
