The Emirates ID card is fast becoming a multi-purpose document
The Emirates ID was introduced in 2009 and has since become a mandatory document for all UAE nationals and residents – including newborn babies. It is a legal requirement for all UAE nationals and residents to carry their Emirates ID with them at all times.
Issued by the Emirates Identification Authority (EIDA), it features an electronic chip which contains vital information about the holder, such as core details, photo and biometric data (finger prints). The card had a slow beginning in terms of what it could be used for beyond a simple means of identification. However it can now be used for myriad reasons like buying a new phone or paying bills. In time it will also take the place of your debit card and driving license.
The procedure for getting a new card
Application You first complete an application form. This can be done online here or at an approved typing office. Tas’heel services are the preferred locations, although many typing offices are also eligible (see map). The fee is Dh30.
Visit EIDA After your form has been submitted, you will receive an SMS directly to your phone. This will state a date and time, as well as the location of the EIDA branch you must visit.
At the centre you will have your photo taken as well as be asked for your finger prints. You will be given a receipt that you must retain in order to collect your card when it is ready.
You will need to take with you the following:
UAE nationalsResidents
Family bookPassport
Valid passportVisa (or visa work permit)
Emirates ID applicationEmirates ID application

Fees The Emirates ID costs Dh100 per year of validity.
Tracking You will be given an account number when you register. You can track the progress of your Emirates ID card by typing the account number intoEIDA’s website (ID Card Status).
Delivery & collection Once your work visa has been issued, your ID card will be sent to a local post office. You will be notified by SMS directly to your phone, although you can still check the status online.
If you don’t collect your card within 90 days it will be returned to EIDA and discarded.
Renewal You will need to renew your Emirates ID when it expires. You follow the same procedure as above, although you may not be expected to give your biometric data a second time. You can use this portal to commence renewal

What else you need to know
Carry your card It is a legal requirement for all nationals and residents to carry their Emirates ID cards at all times. Failure to present your card when asked by the Police could land you in trouble.
Lost card As it is a legal requirement to carry your Emirates ID with you at all times, you must replace a lost card as soon as possible. You will have to apply for a new one following the above procedure.
Changing your name If you change your name – getting married, for example – then you must notify the EIDA.
Children Everyone in the UAE must have an Emirates ID card; this includes children and new-born babies.
Wrong details While it’s important to ensure the correct details have been inputted, sometimes mistakes are made. If you notice any of your details are incorrect, you must visit your nearest EIDA office and take proof of the correct details with you.
